Every piece starts on the wheel and is shaped, trimmed and finished by hand — which means no two are quite the same. I work mostly in warm, layered glazes: iron-rich browns pooling into cream, the odd deep black-blue, always left a little unpredictable so the kiln gets the final say.
I make what I'd actually want to use: mugs with a good weight in the hand, tumblers for tea, coffee or matcha, bowls that earn a place on the table rather than the shelf.

Each piece is one of one. Once it's gone, it's gone — though there's usually something similar coming out of the next kiln.

The maker
I'm Nigel — I make pottery in Brighton, mostly evenings and weekends, mostly because I can't quite stop.
I came to clay later than most people who end up obsessed with it. What hooked me was the bit nobody warns you about: the amount you don't control. You can centre the clay, pull the wall, get the shape you were after — and then the glaze and the kiln do whatever they're going to do. Every piece that comes out is a small negotiation between what I planned and what actually happened.
I still find that the best part. Every mug stamped with my name underneath is one I've thrown, trimmed, glazed and fired myself — start to finish, no two identical.
